Corozal 1st Impressions

Corozal---1st Impressions

Wow, it’s a lot bigger than I thought it would be…I had envisioned a town square with maybe one more block surrounding it---wrong! “Town” extending from the Civic Center in the north to Blues Restaurant in the south is about 11 blocks and from the main road into town (Santa Rita Road) to the water front is about 4 blocks. The streets are lined with shops, restaurants, groceries, fresh produce and meat stores, bakeries, pharmacies, and various car repair shops. You’ll find the library, Post Office, Immigration office and banks near town center. There is a nice town square with fountain and all….

Some streets are paved, others gravel and/or dirt. Not much car traffic in the middle of the day, some pedestrians, some on bicycles, few motorbikes. Granted we were in town at 1p.m.

We had lunch at Patty’s Bistro, on 2nd Street North.  For $20usd we had 4 beers, hamburger w/fries and fish and chips platter. They were playing old Santana music in the background---my favorite! The server was attentive and friendly,  we’ll be back!

We are staying at the Copa Banana, off the main drag on a dead end street. On a gravel/dirt road, the buildings sit at the roadside. This complex has it all! We are staying in a private 1-bedroom apartment-up a circular staircase, full kitchen and bath—with hot water! The other 2 buildings in the complex have a total of 5 bedrooms with their own bathrooms, 2 shared kitchens and living space. Across the street is the office, pool, dock with palapas for hammock swinging or just enjoying the view of the Chetumal Bay. Oh, and there’s a laundry room—with N. American washer—line dry. The owners are very friendly and helpful—supplying advice as well as maps for navigating the area.

We spent about $80usd to supply the kitchen with essentials and food for the next couple of days.
Meats, eggs and some produce
